Using data from credit card transactions, we analyzed how retail spending in the United States varies across different income levels. We found that lower-income groups experienced more significant changes in spending patterns than higher-income groups, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, we identified differences in spending habits between credit card holders and those who use other payment methods, highlighting the importance of including cash transactions in future analyses to get a more accurate picture of retail spending across all income levels.
